How do WordPress and WooCommerce work together?
What WooCommerce adds to WordPress, which businesses it can suit and what to consider before building an online store around it.

WordPress manages the website and its content. WooCommerce adds the foundations of an online shop: products, prices, baskets, checkout, orders and customer accounts. Together they create an open-source ecommerce platform that can combine detailed publishing with online selling.
Content and commerce live in one system
A retailer can publish buying guides, landing pages and editorial content alongside its catalogue. This is particularly useful when customers need education, inspiration or technical information before choosing a product.
Products can be structured in different ways
WooCommerce supports straightforward products as well as variations such as size or colour. Extensions can add subscriptions, bookings, memberships and other selling models. The important question is whether the resulting setup remains maintainable, not simply whether an extension exists.
Payments, shipping and tax need careful configuration
Gateways connect checkout to payment providers. Shipping rules can depend on location, weight, product class or collection options. Tax requirements vary by business and territory. These operational decisions should be confirmed early because they influence data, checkout and testing.
Ownership brings responsibility
A WooCommerce business has control over its hosting, database and extensions, but it must maintain them. Updates should be tested, backups must be recoverable and security monitoring needs an owner. Busy stores also require hosting and caching appropriate to their catalogue and traffic.
Integrations often create the real value
Connecting stock, fulfilment, accounting, customer service or a mobile app can reduce repeated administration. Before development begins, check the quality of each external API and decide which system owns each piece of data.
When might Shopify or bespoke commerce be better?
Shopify can reduce infrastructure responsibility when its operational model fits. Bespoke development can make sense where unusual pricing, procurement or fulfilment is central to the business. WooCommerce is not automatically the cheapest option once complex extensions and maintenance are included.
