Website builder or bespoke development: how should you choose?

How to choose between a managed website builder, WordPress and bespoke development without paying for complexity the business does not need.

Published 3 September 2026 · Updated 3 September 2026

A website platform should make the business easier to run. The wrong decision usually appears at one of two extremes: a simple website becomes an expensive software project, or a business-critical workflow is forced into a page builder that was never designed for it.

The sensible choice depends on what customers need to do, what the internal team needs to manage and how far the website must connect with other systems.

Use a managed builder when simplicity is the advantage

Wix, Squarespace and Webflow can be appropriate for brochure websites, portfolios and focused marketing sites. Hosting, publishing and visual editing sit in one service, which reduces day-to-day technical responsibility.

The trade-off is that the platform defines the boundaries. Bespoke workflows, unusual integrations and complex content relationships can become awkward or depend on a growing collection of workarounds.

Choose WordPress when publishing flexibility matters

WordPress remains useful when a team needs familiar content management, structured publishing and a broad integration ecosystem. It can support far more than a basic brochure site when it is designed carefully.

Plugins need discipline. Adding a plugin for every requirement can create overlapping features, security exposure and difficult upgrades. The question is not whether WordPress can technically do something, but whether it remains the most dependable way to do it.

Choose bespoke development when the workflow is the product

A Laravel application becomes appropriate when the website needs customer portals, permissions, proprietary data, operational workflows or integrations that are central to the service. The business rules can be modelled directly instead of being squeezed into a general-purpose CMS.

Bespoke does not mean every visible component must be invented. Mature frameworks and services provide reliable foundations while development focuses on what is particular to the business.

Consider the next three years, not every imaginable future

Future-proofing does not mean paying for enterprise architecture on day one. Look at credible plans: who will edit the site, which systems must connect, what volume is expected and which changes are already likely. Choose enough room to evolve without funding speculation.

Improving the current platform may be the best answer

A rebuild is not automatically the right solution. Performance, navigation, content and conversion problems can often be corrected inside the existing platform. A useful technical review distinguishes structural limitations from fixable implementation issues.

Our web development service covers managed builders, WordPress and bespoke applications, so the recommendation can be based on the brief rather than a single preferred platform. You can also use the website cost estimator for an initial budget marker.
