How to plan a Unity mobile game before development

A practical process for defining a Unity game’s audience, core loop, content, technology, commercial model and first release.

Published 3 September 2026 · Updated 3 September 2026

Planning a game is not writing a catalogue of menus and features. It means identifying the player, proving the core interaction and understanding how content, progression and commercial goals fit together before full production begins.

Define the player and playing context

Who is the game for, how long is a typical session and what makes them return? A commuter puzzle, children’s learning game and competitive strategy title need different controls, difficulty, safeguarding and session design.

Describe the core loop

Write the repeated sequence of action, feedback, reward and progression. Prototype that loop with minimal art. If the interaction is not understandable or satisfying, additional screens and content will not repair the foundation.

Plan the content pipeline

Levels, characters, audio and localisation often cost more than the underlying mechanic. Decide who creates assets, how they enter Unity and whether new content requires an app update or can be delivered through a managed system.

Choose a proportionate first release

A focused game needs enough variety and progression to provide honest evidence, but not every imagined mode. Define supported devices, orientation, accessibility expectations and offline behaviour so “mobile” is not treated as one uniform target.

Make the commercial model part of design

Premium purchase, advertising, subscriptions and in-app items affect progression and interface. Store rules, parental considerations, fees and player trust should be evaluated before development—not added after the game is balanced.

Identify technical risks early

Multiplayer, physics, procedural content and low-end device performance deserve early prototypes. Analytics and backend requirements should be scoped around decisions the team will actually make from the data.
